Sustainability A–Z was born from a simple question: what actually is sustainability? Inspired by the Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development — “meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations to meet their own needs” — the project explores what sustainability looks like in practice. From A–Z, it highlights what’s working, what we can learn and the positive progress being made around the world.
Meet the Founder
Chris Aikamhenze
Sustainability Enthusiast | MEng Chemical Engineer
Born in Nigeria and raised in Scotland from the age of three, I’ve always been curious about how things work. An early interest in chemistry led me to study Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Football has also been a huge part of my life, from Aberdeen FC’s professional youth system to making my professional debut for Cowdenbeath FC at 18.
My interest in sustainability grew at university, where I began to realise how differently people understand it. So much of the conversation focuses on what has gone wrong or what needs to change, which made me curious about what’s already working. I wanted to discover the positive ideas and progress happening around the world, and explore what we can learn from them. That curiosity became Sustainability A–Z.
